About Bucktown / Wicker Park

Excerpt from Choose Chicago

"One of Chicago's creative epicenters lies just outside downtown Chicago in Bucktown and Wicker Park. These synonymous neighborhoods are famous for live music and nightlife, chef-driven restaurants and countless art galleries - many housed within the Flat Iron Arts Building. If you have an acute knowledge of craft cocktails or an affinity for coffee, plus want to sift through records or thrifted threads, there's no better area to sip and shop in the country. The area has become a prevailing influence on Chicago's Michelin-rated, James Beard Award-winning dining scene, boasting some of the city's most sought after tables. Wicker Park and Bucktown are also known for their palate pleasing nightcaps, like renowned brewery Piece and mixology tour de force The Violet Hour. Along North, Division, Milwaukee and Damen Avenues, you will find an unbelievable blend of vintage shops amid independently owned boutiques touting fashions for both men and women, and luxury home goods and beauty products. On the same blocks are nationally recognized names in fashion, and a mix of major retail chains that have also set up shop to satisfy the on-trend crowds."

Please note that we have tried to stay up to date on all listings, but this is city changes so fast it's hard to keep up sometimes!

Adler Planetarium

1300 N. Lake Shore Drive Chicago, IL
312.922.7827
adlerplanetarium.org

Public Transportation: Take the Blue Line to downtown (toward Forest Park), and get off at Jackson. Walk one block east to State Street and catch #146 (southbound) Bus (or the #130 Museum Campus bus mid-May through Labor day) to the Museum Campus.

Driving: Drive east on Webster and get on I-90/94 East (The Kennedy Expressway). Travel on the expressway for 3.4 miles. Exit at Congress Parkway (290 Eisenhower East changes into Congress Parkway). Follow Congress until it dead ends at Columbus (Buckingham Fountain). Take a right on Columbus and it will merge into Lake Shore Drive. Take South Lake Shore Drive (US-41) past Grant Park. Continue south until the 18th street Exit. Turn left on 18th street and continue as it bends left, becoming Museum Campus Drive.

Parking:   www.adlerplanetarium.org/visit/directions/
All Museum Campus parking lots are owned by the Chicago Parks District and managed by Standard Parking. The Adler does not have control over pricing. Rates can vary due to activities such as football games, concerts, and other special events. Check the Soldier Field and Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island schedules for upcoming events.

Surface lot parking for the Adler Planetarium is available in the Planetarium lot on Lynn White Drive just off of Solidarity Drive. The Planetarium lot is the most convenient parking location for customers visiting the Adler Planetarium or for people attending an event at the Lakefront Pavilion at Northerly Island.

If the Planetarium lot is full, the North garage provides underground parking for 2,500, and is located near the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Children’s Garden, Gold Star Memorial Park and Burnham Harbor. The main entrance to the North garage is located on Museum Campus Drive with a second entrance from McFetridge Drive. In addition to the North garage, additional parking is available near the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium in the East Museum surface lot. The entrance to the lot is located on Museum Campus Drive.

On Chicago Bears’ home game days all Museum Campus parking has been pre–sold by the Chicago Park District to game ticket holders. During other major events at Soldier Field, Museum Campus–area parking lots may be unavailable to museum visitors.

More information about parking on special event days can be found on soldierfieldparking.com

Art Institute of Chicago

111 S. Michigan Ave. Chicago, IL
312.443.3600
artic.edu

Public Transportation: Take the Blue Line toward Forest Park  and get off at Monroe, walk three blocks east to Michigan Ave. and turn right. The Art Institute will be on the left (east) side of the street at the corner of Michigan & Adams.

Driving: Travel East on Webster St. and get on I-90/94 East (The Kennedy Expressway). Continue on the Expressway for 3.4 miles, then exit at Ohio St. Follow Ohio St. about 1 mile to Michigan Ave. Turn right on Michigan Ave. and drive about a mile. The Art Institute will be on the left (east) side of the street at the corner of Michigan & Adams. I recommend parking in the Millennium Park parking garage, which is easily accessible from the center of Michigan Ave.

Brookfield Zoo

3300 Golf Road, Brookfield, IL
708.485.0263
brookfieldzoo.org

Public Transportation: It would be about a $25 Uber ride for this 10 mile trip. It is possible to make it there using public transportation, but involves two trains, a bus and two walks.  So if you are still determined to save the earth, walk to the Western stop on the Blue line and get on the train headed towards Forest Park. Transfer at  Clark & Lake for the Pink Line heading toward 54th & Cermak.  Get off at the end of the line at 54th & Cermak and transfer to the Pace bus #304.  Get off the Pace bus at 31 stand 1st Ave. and walk 0.2 miles west to the Zoo Entrance.

Driving: Travel east on Webster St. and get on 90/94 East (The Kennedy Expressway). Take the I-290 W exit 51H-I to West Suburbs/Chicago Loop—go 9.7 miles.  Take exit 20 to 1st Ave., and then turn left at S 1st Ave. Continue on 1st Ave.  Turn right at Ridgewood then quickly bear right at Washington Ave.  Finally, turn right at Golf Rd and go 0.2 miles to the entrance.

Downtown (The Loop)

Public Transportation: Take the Blue Line toward Forest Park (away from O’Hare) and get off at any stop between Clark and LaSalle.

Driving: Drive east on Webster and get on I-90/94 East (The Kennedy Expressway). Travel on the expressway 3.4 miles. Downtown exits start at Ohio St. (River North, Navy Pier and Magnificent Mile), and east bound exits are Washington (100N), Monroe (100S), Jackson (300S), and Congress (500S). I-290 Eisenhower East changes into Congress Street.

Parking: There are parking garages all over downtown. Metered street parking in the Loop is extremely hard to find and expensive — $2.00 every 15 minutes and 2hr maximum time you can park. North of the Loop around the Michigan Ave / Magnificent Mile area street parking is also very tough east of Michigan and west of Michigan is a little better.

Field Museum of Natural History

1400 S Lake Shore Dr. Chicago, IL
312.922.9410
fieldmuseum.org

Public Transportation: Take the Blue Line toward Forest Park, and get off at Jackson. Walk one block east to State Street and catch #146 (southbound) Bus (or the #130 Museum Campus bus mid-May through Labor day) to the Museum Campus. Get off at the Field Museum.

Driving: Drive east on Webster and get on I-90/94 East (The Kennedy Expressway). Travel on the expressway for 3.4 miles. Exit at Congress (I-290 Eisenhower East changes into Congress). Follow Congress until it dead ends at Columbus (Buckingham Fountain). Take a right on Columbus and it will merge into Lake Shore Drive. Take Lake Shore Drive (US-41) South past Grant Park. Continue south until the 18th street Exit. Turn left on 18th street and continue as it bends left, becoming Museum Campus Drive.

Parking:   www.fieldmuseum.org/visit/parking

All Museum Campus parking is owned, controlled, and priced by the Chicago Park District. It is managed by Standard Parking. Rates and hours are subject to change without notice. Rates are typically higher during sporting or other entertainment events.

At times, the Museum Campus is host to a variety of concerts, sporting events, and other entertainment and special events, which can affect traffic and parking. For current parking rates, visit Soldier Field Parking. Check the Soldier Fieldand at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island schedules for more information.

Designated accessible parking is available in every lot.

The Soldier Field North Garage is open from 5am to 5pm daily, and is accessible via the main entrance on Museum Campus Drive. Parked cars can always leave after closing hours, but overnight parking is not allowed.

Daily parking rates are $19 for the first 4 hours, or $22 for up to 12 hours. Parking rates and hours in all lots are subject to change without notice.

The East Museum lot is located on the east side of The Field Museum. This lot is open from 9am – 3pm daily, and is accessible via the main entrance on Museum Campus Drive.

Parking: There are parking garages all over downtown. Metered street parking in the Loop is extremely hard to find and expensive — $2.00 every 15 minutes and 2hr maximum time you can park. Parking: Most of the parking garages are also west of Michigan Ave. Parking is usually $15 minimum to as much as $45 for a few hours. You might find metered street parking to the west, but it is extremely difficult to find any metered street parking east of Michigan Ave.  Metered parking is $2.00 every 15 minutes, maximum 2 hours (not a typo – $16.00 to park two hours at a downtown meter.

Thanks to their trained volunteer docents, our tours are the real deal–narrated, but not scripted, led by Chicago enthusiasts, not by just-another-day-at-the-office guides. Reservations are strongly recommended for boat and bus tours on busy weekends. For walking and bike tours, arrive at the specified meeting place, at or just before, the stated time and look for a docent with a CAF tag or pin. Groups of ten or more cannot join public walking tours without prior approval from the Tour Department. No reservations necessary for walking tours. All tours operate rain or shine. Any two different standard walking tours may be purchased for a discount. (Two tours for $24; seniors and students $20 with valid ID).”

Transportation

Trains

Amtrak
I have personally become a fan of train travel in America. Chicago is a major hub, serving most major cities throughout the country. Amtrak comes into Union station (downtown Chicago). It’s about a $12 cab ride to my place, or you can take the Blue Line “L”. Exit Union Station on Canal Street and turn left (south) and then turn right (west) on Jackson. Go one block to Clinton and turn left and walk 2 blocks to the Clinton Blue line stop. Catch the Blue Line toward O’Hare and get off at the Western Ave stop. (See Public Transportation above for more details).
Amtrak.com
(800) 872-7245

CTA (City Trains)
http://www.rtachicago.com
The intercity trains are referred to as the “EL or “L” (for elevated), and each line is color-coded. We are located near the Western stop of the Blue Line that runs between Downtown (referred to as The Loop) and O’Hare International Airport. Please be aware the there is another Western stop on the Blue Line on the southwest side of Chicago. The Blue Line train runs 24 hours

If you need to get to either Midway, O’Hare, The Loop, or anywhere else in Chicago, you can walk to the Blue Line stop at Western (it has an elevator for your heavy suitcases). Take a right out of the B&B onto Leavitt St. heading south. When you reach Armitage Ave (4 blocks), turn right (west). When you get to Western Ave turn left (south- there will be a McDonald’s just to the south). At this point you should be able to see the train tracks running over Western Ave. The entrance to the station is on the left side (east) of Western Ave.

If you are coming from O’Hare Airport (www.ohare.com) you can jump on the Blue Line (follow the signs at O”Hare for CTA/City trains—Blue line is the only CTA train at O’Hare).Get off at the first Western stop (between Damen and California). When you exit the Western stop, walk north on Western Ave. (take a right out of the station) past McDonald’s, then take a right (east) onto Armitage Ave. Walk two blocks to N. Leavitt St. (traffic light) and turn left (north). Continue on Leavitt for 4 1/2 blocks to 2144 N. Leavitt St. You will find the B&B on the left (west) side of the street where Webster St. dead-ends

If you are coming from Midway Airport (www.chicago-mdw.com), follow the signs for the CTA/City trains. Get on the Orange Line (the only CTA train that goes to Midway). Transfer from the Orange Line to the Blue Line at the Clark stop. Make sure you get on a Blue Line train headed to O’Hare. Transfers between train lines are free.

Get off at the Western stop (between Damen and California). Leavitt St. You will find the B&B on the left (west) side of the street where W. Webster St. dead-ends.

Although further away from the B&B, you can get off at the Damen stop, which puts you in the heart of the Wicker Park/Bucktown entertainment area (Damen/North/Milwaukee). This is a great area to wander, shop, kill some time, or find a unique restaurant. To get to the B&B from the Damen stop, take a left (north) out of the station and walk 3/4 of a mile (or catch the #50 Damen bus) to W. Webster St. (2200 N) and turn left. Walk 1/4 mile until Webster dead-ends. You will see the B&B’s yellow sign at 2144 N. Leavitt St. You will pass about 20-25 restaurants on Damen Ave alone if you get hungry on your walk. There are restaurants in all directions from the Damen/North/Milwaukee intersection.

Metra

Rideshare & Taxi

Uber & Lyft: Ride sharing is one of the easiest and most popular ways for guests to get around the city.  There are very reliable and readily available from here. Average wait time is about 5-10 minutes (Friday & Saturday nights maybe a little longer). Their rates are reasonable, though watch out for surge pricing during busy periods. We recommend using ride share because you can book for immediate use, or book for future travel (airport the next morning!) We suggest downloading either app on your phone – if you are not familiar feel free to ask a staff member for help. We have a business account that we can book for you and charge it to your room.

Flash Cab— can book online (flashcab.com) or by phone (773.561.4444)

Airport Express: If you are headed to the airport, DO NOT use Airport Express!  They will overcharge you by at least $20, and are extremely unreliable!

Hailing a Taxi: Taxis are available throughout the city by hailing, especially in the downtown areas and entertainment areas. The most likely area you’ll find a cab to hail is on Damen Ave.—simply walk down Webster until you reach Damen ave and turn right (south).

Limo / Car Services are available to/from the airports and reservations must be made in advance.
Taxis at the airports are nicely controlled with dispatchers. Just follow the signs at your terminal. There are shared rides available at times—ask the dispatchers.

Shared Bus service from the airport is unfortunately unavailable to our neighborhood.

Public Transportation

You can find directions to anywhere in Chicago at
www.rtachicago.com.

Trains & Buses are both operated by the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) and work together. You can get one, three, and seven day Visitors Passes at both O’Hare & Midway. We try and stock them, but if you know for sure you want them, pick them up at the kiosk before you enter the train. Basic fare on the trains is $2.50 and buses is $2.25, each line transfer is $.25. The driver will not make change when you board a bus, so bring singles or buy a variable amount transit card at any “L” train station automated kiosk. For trains, simply walk up to a kiosk and buy a transit card. There are attendants at most stations that can help you, but the kiosks are fairly simple to understand. Cash only AND THEY DO NOT GIVE CHANGE and they do not take credit cards.

Trains
The intercity trains are referred to as the “EL or “L” (for elevated), and each line is color-coded. We are located near the Western stop of the Blue Line that runs between Downtown (referred to as The Loop) and O’Hare International Airport. Please be aware the there is another Western stop on the Blue Line on the southwest side of Chicago. The Blue Line train runs 24 hours.

Leavitt St. You will find the B&B on the left (west) side of the street where Webster St. dead-ends.

Leavitt St. You will find the B&B on the left (west) side of the street where W. Webster St. dead-ends. . Although further away from the B&B, you can get off at the Damen stop, which puts you in the heart of the Wicker Park/Bucktown entertainment area (Damen/North/Milwaukee). This is a great area to wander, shop, kill some time, or find a unique restaurant. Buses
Buses run on almost every major North-South street (Damen Ave. and Western Ave. being the two closest to us) and major East-West street (Armitage Ave. and Fullerton Ave.). The advantage of buses is that you can see more of the city, and they stop more often than trains. For complete bus routes, consult a CTA Map, available at the Front Desk or any “L” Station.

Suburban Trips
There are commuter trains (the Metra line has a station at Armitage and Ashland, 1.5 miles away) and bus routes under the RTA (Regional Transportation Authority) called PACE. Train service to the suburbs is great where available, but bus service is spotty at best. Just be aware the CTA Visitor Passes are NOT valid on the Metra or suburban bus routes (PACE).

Catch the Blue Line toward O’Hare and get off at the Western Ave stop.(between Damen and California). Leavitt St. You will find the B&B on the left (west) side of the street where Webster St. dead-ends.
